Traditions hindoues

Hindu traditions

There is no central church or single founding schism. Major devotional families include Vaishnavism, Shaivism and Shaktism; Smarta tradition organises plural worship. Philosophical schools, including non-dualist, qualified and dualist Vedanta, differ over the relationship between self, world and absolute. Bhakti movements, regional traditions and modern reforms further diversified this family.

Judaïsme

Judaism

Ashkenazi, Sephardi and Mizrahi primarily designate cultural, liturgical and diasporic histories, not levels of faith. Orthodox, Masorti/Conservative, Reform/Liberal and Reconstructionist Judaisms differ notably in their relation to Halakha and modernity. Practice, cultural identity and political convictions vary independently. Zionism arose as a modern Jewish national movement, contains multiple tendencies, and is not a religious denomination.

Bouddhisme

Buddhism

Theravada draws on the Pali canon and predominates in several Southeast Asian societies. Mahayana encompasses many East Asian schools, a broad sutra literature and the bodhisattva ideal. Vajrayana develops tantric methods, especially in Tibetan and Himalayan traditions. These are not three uniform blocs: monastic lineages, doctrinal schools and local practices cross them.

Christianisme

Christianity

Early controversies led to conciliar formulations and the separation of several Eastern churches. The lasting division between Greek and Latin Christendom is conventionally associated with 1054, though it was a longer process. The sixteenth-century Reformation produced Protestant families, themselves highly diverse. Catholic, Orthodox, Oriental, Anglican, historic Protestant, Evangelical and Pentecostal traditions coexist today.

Taoïsme

Daoism

The Western distinction between “philosophical” and “religious” Daoism is useful but debated, since texts, practices and institutions have long interacted. Major transmissions include the Celestial Masters, Shangqing, Lingbao and Quanzhen. Monastic lineages, local priests, communal cults and individual practice form a landscape without a single central authority.

Islam

The question of succession to Muhammad contributed to the historical formation of Sunni and Shia traditions; Ibadism followed another early trajectory. Within these families are diverse legal schools, theologies and authorities. Sufism crosses several affiliations rather than constituting an equivalent third branch. “Moderate” and “radical” poorly describe this religious architecture and should not replace precise historical categories.

Sikhisme

Sikhism

Guru Gobind Singh’s founding of the Khalsa in 1699 was a major turning point, without exhausting all forms of Sikh identity. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the Singh Sabha movement and institutional reforms helped define community boundaries. Khalsa and non-Khalsa identities, traditions such as Namdharis or Nirankaris, Punjab institutions and diasporas express distinct interpretations.

Hermétisme

Hermeticism

Scholars distinguish philosophical-religious Hermetica from technical works of astrology, magic and alchemy. Ancient Greco-Egyptian Hermetism, its Christian Renaissance reception and modern occult syntheses are different contexts, linked through texts and reinterpretation rather than one continuous institution.

Gnosticismes

Gnosticisms

“Gnosticism” is a debated scholarly category applied to distinct ancient movements. Sethian and Valentinian traditions had different myths, communities and relations to Christianity. Manichaeism shared some themes but formed an independent historical religion. It is therefore more accurate to speak of constellations and texts than a single Gnostic church.

Alchimie

Alchemy

Greco-Egyptian, Arabic and Islamic, Indian, Chinese and European alchemies have distinct histories and do not derive from one demonstrated source. In Europe, laboratory practice, natural theory and religious imagery coexisted. Exclusively psychological or spiritual readings are mainly modern reinterpretations and should not erase historical material operations.

Kabbale

Kabbalah

Medieval Jewish Kabbalah, sixteenth-century Lurianic Kabbalah and Hasidic receptions belong to distinct phases of Jewish mysticism. Renaissance Christian Kabbalah and later Hermetic Qabalah borrowed and transformed concepts in other religious settings. These families should be historically connected without being conflated.

Soufisme

Sufism

Sufism comprises spiritual paths within Islam, Sunni or Shia according to context. From the medieval period, many orders organised chains of transmission, dhikr methods and distinctive cultures. Contrasts between so-called “sober” and “ecstatic” approaches, or between defenders and critics of particular practices, vary across place and time.

Rose-Croix

Rosicrucian currents

So-called regular traditions generally require belief in a Supreme Being and restrict initiation to men; liberal or adogmatic bodies take other positions and may be male, female or mixed. Emulation, Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, French Rite and many others organise degrees differently. Recognition between jurisdictions remains a major institutional divide.

Occultisme moderne

Modern occultism

Nineteenth-century French occultism, British ceremonial magic, the Golden Dawn, Thelema and diverse modern witchcraft currents are connected but not interchangeable. Disagreements concern textual authority, lineages, ritual methods and the place of religion, psychology or individual will.

Théosophie moderne

Modern Theosophy

Anthroposophy formed after Rudolf Steiner’s break with the Theosophical Society in the early twentieth century. It later developed through the Anthroposophical Society, esoteric teaching and autonomous applications in education, agriculture, medicine and the arts. Astrologie

Astrology
